Historical Perspective

Church Doctor Ministries began in 1978 in Detroit, Michigan, with a handful of pastors and leaders who felt called to begin a ministry to equip churches for transformational change toward the effective implementation of the Lord's Great Commission. In the beginning, the ministry was called the Church Growth Center.

Dr. Kent Hunter was the pastor of Our Saviour Lutheran Church in urban Detroit, his first call in the ministry following graduate school. The church was dying rapidly in a neighborhood that was changing racially. He began a D.Min program at Fuller Seminary and was introduced to the Church Growth Movement. It revolutionized him and his ministry! The people who worked with Kent incorporated the non-profit ministry of Church Doctor Ministries.

This ministry has been blessed with expanding opportunities but remains responsive to the felt needs of churches for the purpose of helping them become more effective in fulfilling the Great Commission.

Two years after its beginning, significant growth convinced Kent that he was called by God to prepare a number of materials for the ministry. He resigned his pastorate and wrote books and materials for two years.

From the Mailbag

"I believe the Church Doctor Ministries is a viable organization in the Church of Christ. I also give thanks to God that there is a ministry that equips people "to become disciples" in a world that is in desperate need of Jesus Christ."
~ Pastor Steve Bauerle, Zion Lutheran / Waterville, Ohio
